I have worked in the not-for-profit sector for around 20 years and in that time have worked around both project development, enterprise start up and business growth. I have an MBA from Cranfield University having been awarded a voluntary sector scholarship.
Specialising in social enterprise support and development I have recently undertaken work with Social Investment Scotland delivering training support on social investment to organisations throughout Scotland, run strategic board discussions for a national membership organisation and am currently providing interim project management to Social Enterprise Scotland. I also offer business development support to The Melting Pot working on its Good Ideas programme.
While working in the waste and recycling sector (1997 – 2006) I developed a number of initiatives including the establishment of a business support programme as part of a £35M lottery fund and the set up of regional offices in order to foster better relationships between local authorities and community enterprises. In a growing sector this work involved understanding procurement cycles and procedures and working with the non-profit sector to prepare and change in tune with their environment.
In 2007 I moved to Edinburgh to set up new social entrepreneur start-up agency, Firstport. Again, developing relationships, raising funding and finance, marketing and promotion, staff recruitment, office set up and all aspects of running a small organisation. By the time I left five years later our turnover was £940,000 and we were a well established social enterprise support organisation.
I have developed and established a number of support and grant programmes and as well as direct work with charities/social enterprise I can work with grant and finance providers, business support functions and the public and private sectors who are looking to provide support and foster new partnerships within the community.
